Volunteers

The Aquarium is looking for volunteers to help run its scientific and educational programmes.
Whatever their skills or their availability, volunteers are always welcome.

Here are some details concerning the activities of Aquarium volunteers.

The three core functions of the Aquarium are :

  • Tourism : promoting New Caledonia and its natural wonders.
  • Education : awareness raising concerning the protection of the environment.
  • Scientific research : conducting programmes of scientific research.

In order to fulfill these missions, the Aquarium has worked closely with volunteers for several years.

The Aquarium needs of helpers revolve mostly around the public educational events, although we sometimes require assistance with scientific pursuits.

Currently, the Aquarium needs, for its educational activities :

  • Setting up displays for the temporary exhibitions. A new exhibition is set up every 3 months.
  • Host public fish-feeding viewing events.
  • Host public events concerning sea turtles.
  • Give guided tours of the Aquarium.
  • Assist in the awareness-raising campaign for the protection of sea turtles.
  • Host events at Amédée Island (site of the iconic lighthouse).
  • Participate in staffing the evening presentations (second Friday of each month) and special events for special occasions (World Oceans Day, Christmas, Halloween, etc.).

Currently, the Aquarium needs, for its technical activities :

  • Help in preparing and dispensing food for the nautilus specimens.
  • Help in feeding the animals.
  • Help in grooming the turtles.
  • Participate in the care of baby turtles.

 

If you are interested, you can register as a volunteer at the reception desk between 10 am and 4 pm, every day except Monday.

You will be given an application form to fill in, and you will be asked to pay a 3000F registration fee which covers such expenses as insurance, tee-shirts, badges, etc. This will only be collected the fist time you sign up .

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers may be given attestations for the hours spent in helping run the Aquarium.

The volunteers operate under the authority of the Scientific and Educational Departments. A general meeting is held every three months.
